Joe Witten‘94

Joe Witten is a 1994 graduate of Floyd Central High School. He was an All-Conference multi-sport student-athlete in baseball and basketball and was selected to play in the Indiana High School North/South All-Star baseball game.

Joe earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Technology from Eastern Kentucky University where he achieved All-American honors playing baseball. He held the school and Ohio Valley Conference pitching record for career saves (31) at the time of his graduation. He also earned the George Lane Sportsmanship award while playing two seasons for the Harwich Mariners, winning the 1996 Eastern Division Championship of the highly prestigious summer Cape Cod Baseball League in Massachusetts. Witten signed a professional baseball contract with the Springfield Capitals, winning the Frontier League Championship in 1998.

Joe’s coaching career began with several Floyd Central junior and senior high programs including baseball, basketball, cross country, and most prominently softball. Witten was the Head Softball Coach at Floyd Central High School for ten seasons. He led FC to the softball program’s first state final four appearance in 2009. He earned Hoosier Hills Conference Coach of the Year five times and voted as a four-time prestigious Indiana North/South All-Star Coach.

He was the Head Softball Coach at Indiana University Southeast for nine seasons leading his teams to a school-record 293 career wins, including four Conference Championships and six national tournament appearances. His staff earned Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2019 and 2021 by the National Fast pitch Coaches Association and was also voted by his coaching peers as four-time Conference Coach of the Year. He simultaneously served as the Director of Intramurals, while also serving as the peer-elected Softball Chair of the River States Conference.

Witten’s teams led the IU Southeast athletic department in community service hours including volunteering for New Albany Track Club, Sellersburg Celebrates, Northside Christian Church, Children’s Academy Early Learning Center, Lincoln Hills Nursing Home, New Albany Floyd County Animal Shelter, New Albany Housing Authority, Harvest Homecoming, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sports Camps, and hosted numerous youth softball camps.

Currently Joe is a teacher and Head Softball Coach at Charlestown High School. His 2024 team set the school-record for most wins in a season. He has served as a certified licensed Indiana High School Athletic Association official for over two decades. Joe and his wife Kendra have four children, Brady, Briar, Janelle, and Jett.
